Cycling Events in Sacramento: Chic, Savage, Dead!

It's a great time to be a cyclist in Sacramento, here are a few wonderful biking events this weekend:

Sunday afternoon: Sacramento Cycle Chic, 12-3:00 p.m.
The ride will commence at McKinley Park's Rose Garden on H St. East Sacramento. Chocolate Fish will have their coffee trike out for delicious caffeinated treats. Then the ride takes off for a jaunte around the capitol and a tour of the park and gardens. We will meet our docent, at 1:00pm, for a tour of the park and the beautiful gardens. The tour is scheduled to take about an hour and the ride finishes up at Hot Italian for another awesome cycling event - which we will get to.
Dressing up is highly encouraged for this cycle chic ride, there will be a prize for the most stylish rider.

Sunday night: The Savage Sprints at Hot Italian v4.0, 4-8:00 p.m. (1627 16th Street)
Stationary bike races, pizza, great wine and people - who could ask for more. Registration for racing is already filled up, but watching is half the fun, and that's free!

Monday: Dead Presidents Ride, Fremont Park, noon

From Vince over at Two Rivers:
Dear Friends,
Two Rivers Cider is hosting the second annual Dead President’s Day Bike Ride and Fundraiser.  This year’s event will raise funds for friend in need and Sacramento’s original bike messenger, Rick Sander.
Celebrate the holiday with us, and meet up at noon at Fremont Park (Hot Italian).  We will ride the route north to an undisclosed location (this is a fun ride, not a competition or distance ride).  Celebrate and enjoy cider and food. $10 gets you cider, swag, food and fun, and additional donations are encouraged.  Show your spirit and dress like your favorite (or least favorite) president (or first lady). Attached is a flyer; spread the word.
See you there!

So I need to get my Jackie O' outfit ready - anyone have a pink pill-box hat I can borrow?

I've been heard at work making this fun posters featuring the crew of Serenity with memorable quotes.
I've done everyone except Simon, mostly because I haven't found a compelling quote from him yet.
So here's a long graphic of all the posters, perfect for pinning! (hint hint).
Right now you can get $5 off any of these great prints, t-shirts or tote bags in my Society6 shop.
If you like this, don't hesitate to share it amongst your sci-fi loving friends.

I Shot First - A Han Solo Halloween

This past Halloween I wanted to do something inherently sexy. Who is sexier than Han Solo? Answer: no one.

I started with pictures of Han. Specifically from "A New Hope."

Here are the elements: Off white, mandarin-collar shirt Black/navy vestDark pants with red stripesBlack boots (I already owned a pair)Belt and holsterBlaster
I started at Thrift Town, where I found a pair of dark slacks, a shirt, and a black suede jacket. I think I spent around $12. I cut the sleeves off the jacket and used red duct tape for the stripes.
I ordered a toy blaster online, it only comes in white and orange. So I had to spray paint it. I used this tutorial.

If I was going to go further with this costume I'd make a replica of the belt, like this awesome woman did.

Luke really wanted to be Luke this year. His costume was a little more tricky. We bought a karate uniform online, he used a pair of khaki pants he already had and we tried to make the boots out of Ace Bandages, but that didn't w…

Guest Post - Hand-made roll-up panniers by Libby Bowles

It's bike month everyone! Don't forget to check out, www.mayisbikemonth.com and register to win prizes and such. In other exciting news, my amazing friend Libby can do anything! She saw my post about panniers a while back and got it in her head to make a pair of these roll-up brooks brand panniers - and she did. Here's the story:
Hey there Melody,  Remember these (Brooks roll-up panniers)?Well, I was so in love that I decided to make my own. They still need a few finishing touches but I was so excited I just had to show you.
I'm going to Tandy Leather on Monday to get the studs for the little internal straps and maybe get a set of leather handles to sew on top so I can carry them like a satchel while shopping.  I made the pattern based on the size of a paper grocery bag so they should be big enough for two full bags of groceries! I think they look perfect on my Gazelle, don't you? (Yes, they look amazing).
I wanted to make them a little prettier on the inside so …
