Thrifty Living: Events

After going a little over board with spending in December we've put the lock down on our bank accounts for the next few weeks.
This means creative meals and entertainment opportunities. Here's the agenda for this weekend:

Thursday, January 27th
FREE Movie Screening - Due Date at Sacramento State University -7:30
"Special movie screening of the 2010 comedy featuring Zack Galifianakis and Robert Downey, Jr., University Union Ballroom. All ages permitted. No alcohol sold or permitted at venue. Rated R for language, drug use and sexual content. Film run time is approximately 95 minutes."
(I have a press party to go to for Sacramento Fashion week tonight, so I'll be missing this opportunity for free entertainment).

Friday, January 28th
Gottfried Helnwein - Inferno Of The Innocents: Director's Circle Reception at the Crocker
I'm very excited about this, we got tickets through my freelance writing gig at Midtown Monthly (cosponsors of the show). There will surely be an outfit post tomorrow as this is a dress-up event.

Saturday, January 29th

Very Verde - Hot Italian, 1-4 pm - FREE tour and limited edition t-shirt
"Hot Italian has been awarded LEED Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, becoming the first restaurant in the region and only the third in the State of California. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program is the nation's preeminent criteria for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. Come for a self-guided tour and see, touch, and feel the green features. The first 100 people to check-in via Facebook receive a Limited Edition American Apparel Silver Hot Italian T-shirt."

The Kneejerk Comedy Hour - The Comedy Spot, 6:30 p.m.  FREE
"What is The Knee Jerk Comedy Hour? It’s a verbal caption contest of sorts, where potentially humorous people fulfill their full comedic verbal potential, potentially. There will be a winner and a loser. In a shorter, more to the point sentence, it’s a show of comments, made by people, about stuff, while competing to see who is the quickest at being funny."
Need more free comedy? The comedy spot is giving away free tickets here.

Sunday, January 30
Gungor Live Worship Experience: Bridgeway Christian Church 7 p.m.  FREE
I'm very excited about this event, a friend turned me on to this band a while back and I fell in love with their earnest and thoughtful lyrics. I've taken comfort time and again in these refrains from their title track, Beautiful Things:

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

All around
Hope is springing up from this old ground
Out of chaos life is being found in You

So, yes, looking forward to that show.

Firefly Portraits: The Crew of Serenity

I've been heard at work making this fun posters featuring the crew of Serenity with memorable quotes.
I've done everyone except Simon, mostly because I haven't found a compelling quote from him yet.
So here's a long graphic of all the posters, perfect for pinning! (hint hint).
Right now you can get $5 off any of these great prints, t-shirts or tote bags in my Society6 shop.
If you like this, don't hesitate to share it amongst your sci-fi loving friends.

I Shot First - A Han Solo Halloween

This past Halloween I wanted to do something inherently sexy. Who is sexier than Han Solo? Answer: no one.

I started with pictures of Han. Specifically from "A New Hope."

Here are the elements: Off white, mandarin-collar shirt Black/navy vestDark pants with red stripesBlack boots (I already owned a pair)Belt and holsterBlaster
I started at Thrift Town, where I found a pair of dark slacks, a shirt, and a black suede jacket. I think I spent around $12. I cut the sleeves off the jacket and used red duct tape for the stripes.
I ordered a toy blaster online, it only comes in white and orange. So I had to spray paint it. I used this tutorial.

If I was going to go further with this costume I'd make a replica of the belt, like this awesome woman did.

Luke really wanted to be Luke this year. His costume was a little more tricky. We bought a karate uniform online, he used a pair of khaki pants he already had and we tried to make the boots out of Ace Bandages, but that didn't w…

Guest Post - Hand-made roll-up panniers by Libby Bowles

It's bike month everyone! Don't forget to check out, www.mayisbikemonth.com and register to win prizes and such. In other exciting news, my amazing friend Libby can do anything! She saw my post about panniers a while back and got it in her head to make a pair of these roll-up brooks brand panniers - and she did. Here's the story:
Hey there Melody,  Remember these (Brooks roll-up panniers)?Well, I was so in love that I decided to make my own. They still need a few finishing touches but I was so excited I just had to show you.
I'm going to Tandy Leather on Monday to get the studs for the little internal straps and maybe get a set of leather handles to sew on top so I can carry them like a satchel while shopping.  I made the pattern based on the size of a paper grocery bag so they should be big enough for two full bags of groceries! I think they look perfect on my Gazelle, don't you? (Yes, they look amazing).
I wanted to make them a little prettier on the inside so …
