First post of 2011

Greetings faithful readers,
My sincerest apologies for the prolonged blogging absence. My excuses are all lame, so I'll spare you.

It's 2011~ So far it's been a weird year.
As you know I've picked up writing for Midtown Monthly a few months ago. Here's my newest monthly feature piece entitled Small Medium Large.

You can pick up a copy for free. It's on news stands around midtown now!

As a result of freelancing for Midmo, I've rekindled my love for feature writing. So my new years resolution is to write more this coming year.
So we'll see how things go.

I grabbed mine yesterday. Nice piece. I especially loved hearing a bit about Heart Boutique. But I have to ask...are you married to the title? It was a bit confusing at first, especially since you were writing about clothing.
And I'm STILL jealous of your beautiful Thrift Town score!
See you on the 21st?

yea, I didn't chose the name or come up with the concept. They had something they wanted done and thought i'd be a good fit. So I'm happy.

Libby - i will see you on the 21, I can't wait. I've been slacking so much in the drawing/designing department, :(
You did a great job on the sm-m-lg column.

Was missing over here in blogland, however, wondered what was happening.

Are you taking the Shop Secondhand Pledge? If so I want to write about you. Lemme know.

Firefly Portraits: The Crew of Serenity

I've been heard at work making this fun posters featuring the crew of Serenity with memorable quotes.
I've done everyone except Simon, mostly because I haven't found a compelling quote from him yet.
So here's a long graphic of all the posters, perfect for pinning! (hint hint).
Right now you can get $5 off any of these great prints, t-shirts or tote bags in my Society6 shop.
If you like this, don't hesitate to share it amongst your sci-fi loving friends.

I Shot First - A Han Solo Halloween

This past Halloween I wanted to do something inherently sexy. Who is sexier than Han Solo? Answer: no one.

I started with pictures of Han. Specifically from "A New Hope."

Here are the elements: Off white, mandarin-collar shirt Black/navy vestDark pants with red stripesBlack boots (I already owned a pair)Belt and holsterBlaster
I started at Thrift Town, where I found a pair of dark slacks, a shirt, and a black suede jacket. I think I spent around $12. I cut the sleeves off the jacket and used red duct tape for the stripes.
I ordered a toy blaster online, it only comes in white and orange. So I had to spray paint it. I used this tutorial.

If I was going to go further with this costume I'd make a replica of the belt, like this awesome woman did.

Luke really wanted to be Luke this year. His costume was a little more tricky. We bought a karate uniform online, he used a pair of khaki pants he already had and we tried to make the boots out of Ace Bandages, but that didn't w…

Guest Post - Hand-made roll-up panniers by Libby Bowles

It's bike month everyone! Don't forget to check out, www.mayisbikemonth.com and register to win prizes and such. In other exciting news, my amazing friend Libby can do anything! She saw my post about panniers a while back and got it in her head to make a pair of these roll-up brooks brand panniers - and she did. Here's the story:
Hey there Melody,  Remember these (Brooks roll-up panniers)?Well, I was so in love that I decided to make my own. They still need a few finishing touches but I was so excited I just had to show you.
I'm going to Tandy Leather on Monday to get the studs for the little internal straps and maybe get a set of leather handles to sew on top so I can carry them like a satchel while shopping.  I made the pattern based on the size of a paper grocery bag so they should be big enough for two full bags of groceries! I think they look perfect on my Gazelle, don't you? (Yes, they look amazing).
I wanted to make them a little prettier on the inside so …
