Dress #18 - Black and Tan (and red)

The sidewalk is my runway.
Today's outfit is inspired by Sex in the City. Although after scouring the internet for a photo of Carrie Bradshaw wearing a similar coat I found nothing and I think it might have been in my imagination.
The coat was a hand-me-down from a classmate and faithful reader. Thanks again Libby!
The boots are my vintage finds from Bows and Arrows.
The dress is a tube top I found ages ago at Vintage Avenger in Arcata, California. My sister gave me the hat. I'm wearing a little birdcage pendant my friend, Corrie, gave me for Christmas.
It's a nice chilly day in Sacramento and I'm feeling good about my outfit. Now, off to Weatherstones to study Arabic!

i really really like the jacket....and you're right, for some reason it made me think of carrie. she must have definitely worn something like it at some point. the dress is just ok for me....i like the colors, but i think you have several cuter dresses in your wardrobe already.

it's getting colder down here in los angeles, too....i'm glad fall has finally started to arrive!

The coat is totally almost famous! I can't believe I didn't see it before. I'm totally going to have to do a Penny Lane post!
GREAT coat! That coat is going to get worn out this winter.

Hahah, people hate this dress! I guess it's going in the burn pile.

Firefly Portraits: The Crew of Serenity

I've been heard at work making this fun posters featuring the crew of Serenity with memorable quotes.
I've done everyone except Simon, mostly because I haven't found a compelling quote from him yet.
So here's a long graphic of all the posters, perfect for pinning! (hint hint).
Right now you can get $5 off any of these great prints, t-shirts or tote bags in my Society6 shop.
If you like this, don't hesitate to share it amongst your sci-fi loving friends.

I Shot First - A Han Solo Halloween

This past Halloween I wanted to do something inherently sexy. Who is sexier than Han Solo? Answer: no one.

I started with pictures of Han. Specifically from "A New Hope."

Here are the elements: Off white, mandarin-collar shirt Black/navy vestDark pants with red stripesBlack boots (I already owned a pair)Belt and holsterBlaster
I started at Thrift Town, where I found a pair of dark slacks, a shirt, and a black suede jacket. I think I spent around $12. I cut the sleeves off the jacket and used red duct tape for the stripes.
I ordered a toy blaster online, it only comes in white and orange. So I had to spray paint it. I used this tutorial.

If I was going to go further with this costume I'd make a replica of the belt, like this awesome woman did.

Luke really wanted to be Luke this year. His costume was a little more tricky. We bought a karate uniform online, he used a pair of khaki pants he already had and we tried to make the boots out of Ace Bandages, but that didn't w…

Guest Post - Hand-made roll-up panniers by Libby Bowles

It's bike month everyone! Don't forget to check out, www.mayisbikemonth.com and register to win prizes and such. In other exciting news, my amazing friend Libby can do anything! She saw my post about panniers a while back and got it in her head to make a pair of these roll-up brooks brand panniers - and she did. Here's the story:
Hey there Melody,  Remember these (Brooks roll-up panniers)?Well, I was so in love that I decided to make my own. They still need a few finishing touches but I was so excited I just had to show you.
I'm going to Tandy Leather on Monday to get the studs for the little internal straps and maybe get a set of leather handles to sew on top so I can carry them like a satchel while shopping.  I made the pattern based on the size of a paper grocery bag so they should be big enough for two full bags of groceries! I think they look perfect on my Gazelle, don't you? (Yes, they look amazing).
I wanted to make them a little prettier on the inside so …
