Gearing up for a tweed-ride

With the next tweed ride over a month away it's never too early to start planning an outfit or the picnic menu.

Tweed rides are an international phenomenon, where cyclists shun the traditional spandex in favor of knickers, vests, jackets, dresses, high heals and goggles.

Because the ride falls at the end of June and takes place in Sacramento it's going to be a seersucker ride, since tweed is too warm.

Seersucker, being that puckery light fabric, is perfect for summer rides. In keeping with the turn-of-the-century vintage look I checked modcloth.com for options, this dress would be appropriate. Ideally I'll find a  pair of light blue seersucker shorts and wear a lacy white button-up top.

I also want a pair of crocheted riding gloves from Effie's Heart and a yellow straw hat.

For the picnic I'm planning:
  • cucumber sandwiches
  • raspberry lemonade
  • a goat cheese platter with pears, apples and crackers
  • prosciutto wrapped basil and mozzarella
  • pretty table cloth and fresh flowers in a vase
For more information about upcoming tweed/seersucker rides check out the Sacramento Tweed blog or the SF Tweed blog, or whatever major city you're closest to, if you don't have a tweed ride, start one.

Molly has the prefect hat for this ride, it looks a lot like the one pictured only with a wide dark green ribbon and a bit of matching netting. I could bring it to you, if she oks it.

Oh yes, that would be lovely. And, if in all your free time you could learn how to crochet and make me some riding gloves, that would be awesome! Haha, thanks, Mom, I love you!

Firefly Portraits: The Crew of Serenity

I've been heard at work making this fun posters featuring the crew of Serenity with memorable quotes.
I've done everyone except Simon, mostly because I haven't found a compelling quote from him yet.
So here's a long graphic of all the posters, perfect for pinning! (hint hint).
Right now you can get $5 off any of these great prints, t-shirts or tote bags in my Society6 shop.
If you like this, don't hesitate to share it amongst your sci-fi loving friends.

I Shot First - A Han Solo Halloween

This past Halloween I wanted to do something inherently sexy. Who is sexier than Han Solo? Answer: no one.

I started with pictures of Han. Specifically from "A New Hope."

Here are the elements: Off white, mandarin-collar shirt Black/navy vestDark pants with red stripesBlack boots (I already owned a pair)Belt and holsterBlaster
I started at Thrift Town, where I found a pair of dark slacks, a shirt, and a black suede jacket. I think I spent around $12. I cut the sleeves off the jacket and used red duct tape for the stripes.
I ordered a toy blaster online, it only comes in white and orange. So I had to spray paint it. I used this tutorial.

If I was going to go further with this costume I'd make a replica of the belt, like this awesome woman did.

Luke really wanted to be Luke this year. His costume was a little more tricky. We bought a karate uniform online, he used a pair of khaki pants he already had and we tried to make the boots out of Ace Bandages, but that didn't w…

Guest Post - Hand-made roll-up panniers by Libby Bowles

It's bike month everyone! Don't forget to check out, www.mayisbikemonth.com and register to win prizes and such. In other exciting news, my amazing friend Libby can do anything! She saw my post about panniers a while back and got it in her head to make a pair of these roll-up brooks brand panniers - and she did. Here's the story:
Hey there Melody,  Remember these (Brooks roll-up panniers)?Well, I was so in love that I decided to make my own. They still need a few finishing touches but I was so excited I just had to show you.
I'm going to Tandy Leather on Monday to get the studs for the little internal straps and maybe get a set of leather handles to sew on top so I can carry them like a satchel while shopping.  I made the pattern based on the size of a paper grocery bag so they should be big enough for two full bags of groceries! I think they look perfect on my Gazelle, don't you? (Yes, they look amazing).
I wanted to make them a little prettier on the inside so …
